Booming Midlands and Birmingham Construction

Posted by Adam Cadwaladr on Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Construction in the Midlands may have been understated in my recent blogs, so I'm going to write a little on how Quantity Surveyors, Claims professionals, Planners and Project Managers can get a taste of the action in the Birmingham and Midlands region.

Everyone by now of course is aware of the HS2 project, with most probably knowing that the headquarters will be based in Birmingham. Massive enabling works are due to be awarded in April / May 2016, with the royal assent coming in January 2017, so full awards and the start on site is predicted to be Quarter 1 in 2017.

Three major consulting engineers won design contracts near the end of last year worth a combined £150m for phase 2 of HS2 between Birmingham and Crewe, out of multiple bidders for the work. The plan is for the route to open in 2027, one year after the opening of phase one between London and Birmingham.

In other sectors, the major building development in Birmingham is the Paradise Circus. This £500m development is an enormous mixed use project involving hotels, retail stores, restaurants, cinemas and more. This project started on site last year. There is also a fair amount of commercial office project based work in Birmingham, with the residential sector taking a little while longer to kick off – however a leading statistical firm has predicted growth in this sector in Birmingham with projects due to kick off in the residential sector this year. A quote from Building magazine says that only 600 units are under construction in the city, and that Birmingham is still catching up from the recession – the headquarters of HS2 being in Birmingham is thought to be a potential catalyst for growth in Birmingham, driving renewed confidence. Firms are hiring in Birmingham – no doubt about it, I have various opportunities in the city, and construction is set to boom further in the near future.

I am recruiting for numerous Quantity Surveying positions in Birmingham at present, and the Midlands in general. If you are a Quantity Surveyor looking to find a new opportunity within the Midlands, do get in touch with a CV as we will most likely have the opportunity to suit your needs.
