Construction Professionals Jobs in Cambridge

Posted by Stuart Hackett on Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Many locations in the UK have been experiencing increased construction activity over the last couple of years. Whilst London hogs the headlines due to a huge skills shortage, I want to take a look at alternative locations where there is a particularly high demand for construction professionals such as Quantity Surveyors.

In terms of cities based outside of London that are busy at the minute, Cambridge has to be right up there with the busiest.

I first became aware of a number of Quantity Surveying vacancies in Cambridge towards the end of 2015. Whilst speaking to hiring managers in construction companies based in and around the city, it was clear that when they did require staff, they were finding it hard to come by suitable CV's and this is still the case so far in 2016.

Of the work being carried out in Cambridgeshire there is a particularly strong market in the educational, residential and commercial sectors.

CB1 Development

The city of Cambridge has set out ambitious plans to redevelop its city centre several years back, The development's vision was to re-develop a 25 acre space within the city centre, making it more attractive for businesses to invest in the city and more pleasant for the city's residents. The scheme consisted of:

  • 25 acres site
  • Mixed-use scheme that will create a new city quarter for Cambridge
  • New station square
  • New transport interchange
  • 500,000 sq ft grade A offices
  • 500,000 sq ft prime residential units and student accommodation
  • 70,000 sq ft PRS 70,000 sq ft hotel space
  • 50,000 sq ft retail

CB 4 Development

This CB1 re-development is well underway and the same developer is now carrying out a similarly ambitious plans to re-develop a separate part of the city which is largely brown field land. This scheme will be named CB4 in line with the previous development.

Details in this development include:

  • 36 acres
  • New station building
  • New station and transport interchange with Guided Bus connection
  • Mixed use quarter
  • 700,000 sq ft grade A business park
  • 600,000 sq ft prime PRS residential units and student accommodation
  • 30,000 sq ft retail
  • Secure storage for 1,000 bicycles

Education

Cambridge University is widely regarded as one of the leading universities in the World and with the stature of this prestigious organisation, comes significant development. Not only has the University invested in significant new build and refurbishment projects over recent years, but due to the number of students and education workers in the city; affordable accommodation is big business seems to be constantly undergoing development within the city. A new £75m, 264 apartment development was actually awarded just before Christmas 2015.

The city is also home to Anglia Ruskin University who are also making multimillion GBP developments. It was reported a couple of weeks ago that a £25m Science Centre was to start construction. The development includes a 300 lecture theatre and a 200 seat super laboratory, staff offices and specialist teaching areas.
