Demand for HSE in the GCC Continues to Climb

Sitting in the car on my way to work during my first week in the new Maxim Recruitment Dubai office, I listened to the opening story on the morning news bulletin about another fatality on a construction site in the city. Eight weeks have passed since then and coincidentally (or not as the case may be) our job board in the Middle East has an abundance of opportunities for Health & Safety and Quality Assurance professionals.

Whilst the health and safety standards in the GCC have notably improved since we first began our construction recruitment business here in 2003, the demand for those who have experience with HSE procedures in the West continues to rise.

Needless to say, accidents on construction sites have a detrimental effect on a company’s reputation, and consequently those who serve to prevent these things from happening are an invaluable string to any construction company’s bow.

It’s not just individual companies that go under the microscope when procedures aren’t followed correctly and accidents happen; following their award of the 2022 World Cup, Qatar faced widespread scrutiny for their fatality count in the construction sector.

A FIFA spokesperson, commented: "We are doing everything in our power to improve the welfare of migrant workers and to use the hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as a catalyst for positive social change".

Having just last month also secured the 2019 World Athletic Championships; the pressure is only going to intensify on Qatar.

Aside from those who specialise in these fields, our interaction with clients and others in the construction sector has highlighted the importance of proficiency in Health and Safety in other roles. As Rob Cooling, Institution of Occupational Safety, states: “If health and safety has not been considered at the planning stage, and it isn't costed into the tendering process, once you get to the construction phase, you're fire fighting.”

If you have experience as a Planning or Project Manager working on Stadia then register your interest with our team in Dubai and you could find yourself working on one of the biggest sporting projects in history.  You will also be able to contribute to improving health and safety standards.

Can you make a difference?
With the whole world watching, is there a better time for ambitious professionals to put themselves on the map in Qatar? If you have HSE or quality experience in the construction industry and are seeking a great career opportunity and challenge, please forward your CV to john@maximrecruitment.com in our Dubai office.
