Time to Go Ahead: Construction of Macau's Public Transport Interchange

Posted by Steve Thomas on Wednesday, November 12, 2014

In addition to all the hotel and casino projects which are planned for and already under construction in the near future in Macau, the Public Transport Interchange (PTI) project at Barra is also about to enter its construction stage as well.

The tender opening procedure for the PTI had been completed. 11 bids for the construction of this project were received, where the tender price ranges from HKD$ 1,186,271,844.66 to HKD$ 1,631,655,502.91. A tender opening meeting for reviewing these documents was held on 11 September. According to Wong Hoi Weng, the head of the Transportation Infrastructure Office’s technical group, the construction phase is expected to start at the end of this year or early next year.

The PTI is a project which seeks to combine and connect several transportation modes, including taxi, bus and the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) systems. It will be located next to the Customs Service headquarter and the LRT Barra station. The PIT will be built underground, and a green open space will be located on the surface. A three-story basement for buses and shuttle buses to park, pick up and drop off passengers, and around 500 parking spot for cars and motorcycles will be provided after the completion of this project.

The Border Gate interchange, another large-scale underground interchange in Macau, has always been criticized for its lack of ventilation. People always complain for the unsatisfactory air quality and high temperatures. In order to avoid the same problem from happening, sensors will be installed to monitor the air quality underground in the PTI.

The construction of this project marks the beginning of construction for the LRT on Barra station. The GIT is currently adjusting the design of the LRT Barra station. The bidding process will be expected to start by the end of this year.

As the LRT phase one and two and the planned Macau Peninsula circuit will all go via Barra Station, the Barra Station will become an important transport node in Macau. Therefore, the construction of PTI is a very critical project at the moment.
