A Chartered Civil Engineer job in London is available with a specialist engineering consultancy that has a dedicated focus on the forensic investigation of civil engineering and structural engineering defects.

This Civil Engineering job role based in London is to join the specialist Senior Civil Engineers and Engineering Expert Witnesses team to work together to research, understand and write reports relating to client problems such as structural failures, inadequate durability of steel and concrete structures, problems with basement structures, matters relating to period buildings, concerns or failure of heavily loaded industrial floors and pavements, and drainage and flooding problems relating to both buildings and civil engineering structures.

Responsibilities and Duties

Your job as a Chartered Civil Engineer is a critical role for this London based company and is an excellent career opportunity for a Chartered civil engineer to specialise in the area of forensic and expert technical advice.

Using your engineering qualifications, chartership study and your 'real world' design consultancy experience. you will engage in specialist Forensic Engineering work to identify the key issues relating to the client's design dispute problem.

Expert Civil and Structural Engineering analysis will need to be undertaken in relation to a range of project types, including heavy civil engineering works, hydraulic structures, offshore platforms, below ground construction, structural steelwork, waterproofing systems, concrete durability and epoxy resin applications.

The objective being to establish and evidence the probable causes of failure, delay, damage and describe the key factors requiring remediation and identify the party at fault required to undertake such remediation.

You will be required to liase with various parties including the client's consulting engineers, construction civil engineering or building contractors and with the building or project owners on the engineering matters in focus.

You will be involved with a wide range of disputes, usualy concurrently, and will undertake detailed engineering analysis of professional design work completed relating to the design, materials and workmanship problems under scrutiny.

Desired Skills and Experience

The Civil Engineer job role requires significant and relevant previous experience, ideally on a wide range of structural and civil engineering projects in the United Kingdom and perhaps internationally.

Likely to be a mid career role for the right candidate, some exposure to relevant design work on civil-engineering structures, post-tensioned concrete bridges, buildings, vibrations in buildings, subsidence, floor screeds, building envelopes and familiarity with contract administration is all desirable.

Some experience of liaising with solicitors and barristers and preparing CPR-compliant reports and joint statements wold be ideal, although training and experience of this can be given to the most capable applicants.

All levels of experience will be considered on merit, although it is envisaged that at least 7+ years' experience will be needed to meet the minimum experience levels required to do the job.

Some exposure to dispute and forensic engineering analysis work is highly desirable, and is preferred, however candidates with a strong civil or structural background that can demonstrate a high level of analytical and literacy skills will also happily be considered.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A high quality civil engineering or structural engineering degree is essential, prererably from a leading recognised university
  • Chartership within civil engineering or structural engineering is also essential
