Responsibilities and Duties

The Commercial Manager role requires knowledge and understanding of all aspects of commercial management gained from working within a contractor’s or employer’s organization, to include but not limited to an understanding of contracts, risk, health & safety, progress planning, partnering, cost reporting.

  • The primary responsibility of the role is to administer all commercial and contractual matters relating to a specific element(s) of the Power Station
  • Ensure commercial processes and procedures are adhered to
  • Develop a team spirit with team members
  • Set clear commercial objectives and cascade to commercial team for the implementation of the commercial strategy
  • All correspondence and meeting records from the Contractor are reviewed and responded to accordingly
  • Develop and encourage direct staff to take responsibility for sections of the Project
  • Ensure Employer’s insurance and safety department are advise of any incidents
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities and manage them through to conclusion to minimise Employer’s liability
  • Develop an effective interface with the Employers financial procedures
  • Value large and complex variations and claims expeditiously
  • Co-ordinate the management of claims to ensure responses are provided in a timely manner
  • Ensure accurate records are maintained
  • Fulfil any other task that can be reasonably within the contemplation of the role
  • Become aware and where appropriate apply SHEQ/Zero Harm Health and Safety objectives and Procedures to the role
  • Become aware of the Environmental Objectives and Procedures associated with the Project Site

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Significant experience as a Commercial Manager or similar job role
  • Strong Quantity Surveying background with some experience of managing a team of commercial professionals
  • Good understanding of contractual law
  • Extensive FIDIC experience and knowledge
  • Technical knowledge in commercial, contract and risk management
  • Exposure to large engineering and construction projects
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to resolve problems independently and operate efficiently under pressure

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Degree or similar equivalent in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Membership of a Professional Body associated with Quantity Surveying is desired

Additional Benefits Package and Incentives

The salary advertised is subject to South African tax at circa 40%. On top of the salary, candidates can expect the company to provide them with accommodation near to the site, a car and private medical cover. Expatriate staff will be eligible for annual flights to their country of origin.
