The successful candidate will work on complex construction and engineering disputes across Canada and potentially international jurisdictions.
Projects are not limited to one asset class and are likely to include major building, infrastructure, transportation, energy and engineering matters where delay, disruption, quantum, technical and duty of care issues arise.
The employer provides expert services in quantum, delay, project management and technical disciplines to the global construction and engineering industry.
Responsibilities and Duties
This Delay Director job in Toronto, Canada will suit a proven expert who can combine fee-earning delivery with leadership, mentoring and business growth.
The role will work closely with the Country Director and help shape the direction of the business in Ontario and across Canada.
- Develop, lead and mentor a team of construction claims and disputes professionals
- Grow the Toronto, Ontario business by developing new and existing client relationships across the construction and legal sectors
- Lead and undertake fee-earning construction delay and dispute assignments
- Meet clients and legal counsel in relation to adjudication, mediation, arbitration and litigation matters
- Prepare expert reports relating to delay, disruption, extension of time, programme analysis and associated construction dispute matters
- Provide verbal expert testimony arising from formal expert appointments
- Advise clients on commercial strategy, contract matters, programme issues, risks and opportunities
- Support operational leadership responsibilities when required by the Country Director
- Prepare and deliver presentations on construction delay, dispute resolution and expert witness topics
- Build relationships with relevant professional and industry bodies across Canada
- Travel within Canada and internationally when required
- Work on a hybrid basis, including attendance at the downtown Toronto office one or more days per week
Desired Skills and Experience
This construction disputes leadership role requires an established professional with strong technical credibility, expert witness capability and a demonstrable track record in business development within the Ontario construction market.
- Established network and market presence within the engineering, construction and/or legal sectors in Canada, especially Ontario
- Strong experience of construction disputes and construction delay analysis within the Canadian construction industry
- Demonstrable success in identifying, bidding for, securing and delivering fee-earning claims and dispute work
- Experience preparing expert reports for adjudication, arbitration or litigation proceedings
- Prior appointment as an Expert and ideally Expert Witness on formal dispute matters
- Strong leadership, team development and mentoring skills
- Successful track record in business development and winning work
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills in English
- Strong public speaking and presentation capability
- Experience engaging with Canadian construction industry bodies such as AACE, OGCA, CCA and SCL-NA
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Degree qualified
- Master of Laws (LLM) would be advantageous
- Recognised certification such as PSP or CFCC with AACE International would be advantageous
