The candidate assigned to this role will interface with the leaders of the Commercial Management, Procurement, and Construction Management functions closely. They will hold responsibility for Design Management/ Oversight for all design-build projects - within the company and in joint ventures. The role will require someone with the seniority to authorise and organize major departments and senior staff positions.

Project Details

The Head of Design Management will be a key member of the organisation. They will be accountable for the people, processes, and performance of Design Management across the company. To support the achievement of top-line revenue growth, the position will be accountable for making available competent and trained resources to staff the projects; establishing and maintaining consistent processes by which work is executed.

Responsibilities and Duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise and assign responsibilities to staff and teams including project managers, superintendents, project coordinators and administrative assistants
  • Manage performance expectations and conduct performance evaluations of project staff
  • Provide advice, guidance, and direction to subordinate executives and managers toward their professional development
  • Perform periodic reviews of project/program implementation of core processes
  • Perform reviews of variances at the request of business line/project managers and recommend solutions
  • Support projects/programs by assisting in updating, reviewing, and accepting revised Project Execution Plans
  • Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) expertise to projects/programs
  • Assist with project/program team performance issues
  • Improve project execution capability by staying current with industry trends and new innovations/technologies, and implements into the enterprise
  • Plan the assignment of resources to ensure robust support of business projections, in collaboration with the business line management
  • Assign personnel, in collaboration with the business line management, to projects/programs
  • Ensure resources within their functional group are properly trained, evaluated, and motivated
  • Provide long term career advice and coordinates stretch assignments, learning opportunities, and assignments with the business line management
  • Evaluate the skill levels, learning & development needs, career potential, and succession plans for the functional team looking across the business line
  • Allocate material, human and financial resources to implement organizational policies and programs
  • Represent the organization, or delegate representatives to act on behalf of the organization, in negotiations or other official functions
  • Co-ordinate the work of regions, divisions or departments
  • Establish objectives for the organization and formulate or approve policies and programs
  • Select middle managers, directors or other executive staff; delegate the necessary authority to them and create optimum working conditions

Desired Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will have demonstrable evidence of 2-3 years of:

  • Ability to manage and influence engineering organizations with efficiency of construction in mind
  • Ability to implement changes throughout an organization
  • Leadership experience
  • Being Design Leader on projects worth over $500 Million
  • Working on complex road, bridge, rail, airport, water and waste water projects exceeding $250 million contract value
  • Project management
  • Working on major pursuits and proposals
  • Construction projects, with thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, methods), industry practices, estimating/budgeting, scheduling and safety requirements
  • Financial and commercial management experience of complex major projects

As well as:

  • Managerial experience in design engineering for rail projects
  • Applied knowledge/experience of best practices and procedures of the Design Management function
  • An enthusiasm and desire to set up and maintain changes in the organization
  • Ability to resolve project disputes
  • Experience with complex private and public partnership contracts
  • Strong teaming and communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, MS Word and Excel

  • A related professional qualification is desired
