Managing Director - Quantity Surveying
A Managing Director - Quantity Surveying is required in London to lead and grow a specialist quantity surveying, cost management and construction consultancy team.
This is a senior appointment offering the opportunity to shape strategy, manage key client relationships and deliver high-value QS and commercial advisory services.

The successful candidate will work across a broad range of building, infrastructure, residential, commercial, public sector and private sector projects.
The role will involve leading quantity surveying, cost planning, procurement advice, contract administration, construction cost management, final account, valuation and commercial advisory services.
Responsibilities and Duties
This is a senior leadership role for an experienced Quantity Surveying Director, Cost Management Director or Managing Director with strong technical, commercial and business development credentials.
The successful candidate will be expected to lead from the front, both commercially and operationally.
Key duties and responsibilities will include:
- Lead, manage and develop a London-based quantity surveying and cost consulting team
- Take responsibility for the performance, growth and profitability of the quantity surveying service line
- Develop and implement a business plan for the continued growth of the QS, cost management and commercial advisory offering
- Maintain and grow relationships with existing clients across construction, property, infrastructure and related sectors
- Win new instructions and identify business development opportunities with employers, contractors, developers, funders, legal teams and professional consultants
- Oversee the delivery of cost planning, cost management, procurement advice, tender documentation, tender analysis and contract administration services
- Provide senior-level technical and commercial advice on JCT, NEC and other standard forms of construction contract
- Review and guide the preparation of valuations, variations, final accounts, contractual correspondence and commercial reports
- Support clients in relation to construction claims, quantum valuation, loss and expense, extension of time submissions and commercial risk
- Promote high standards of governance, quality assurance, service delivery and technical excellence
- Mentor, develop and retain senior quantity surveyors, cost managers and commercial staff
- Support the recruitment of additional QS and cost management professionals as the team grows
- Act as a senior representative of the business at client meetings, networking events and industry forums
- Work collaboratively with related advisory, dispute, expert witness, project management and technical teams where required
Desired Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will be a highly experienced quantity surveying, cost management or commercial advisory professional with a strong track record in leadership, client management and business growth.
Suitable candidates are likely to have:
- Extensive quantity surveying, cost management or commercial management experience within the UK construction industry
- Previous experience operating at Director, Partner, Managing Director or senior leadership level
- A strong understanding of quantity surveyor responsibilities across pre-contract and post-contract stages
- Proven ability to lead and grow a QS, cost consulting or commercial advisory business unit
- Strong client-facing skills and a demonstrable track record of winning and retaining work
- Excellent knowledge of cost planning, procurement, tendering, contract administration, valuations, variations and final accounts
- Strong working knowledge of JCT and NEC forms of contract
- Experience advising on construction risk, commercial strategy, change management and cost control
- Experience involving claims documentation, quantum analysis or dispute-related commercial work would be advantageous
- Strong leadership, mentoring and team development skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong commercial awareness and the ability to operate strategically
- A professional, confident and credible manner when dealing with senior clients and stakeholders
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- A degree or similar qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Law or a related construction discipline is expected
- MRICS or FRICS status
- Strong continuing professional development and evidence of senior industry credibility would be welcomed
