A day in the life of a Recruitment Consultant

Posted by Daria Tkach, Senior Recruitment Consultant on Tuesday, August 16, 2022

My role as a Recruitment Consultant with Maxim is varied and challenging, and no day is ever the same. Maxim Recruitment is an independent recruitment consultancy that was established in 2003 to service the building, civil engineering and consulting sectors of the construction industry.

I am one of the Recruitment Consultants with Maxim, and predominantly work on roles such as:

  • Clerk of Works and Quality Technical Inspector
  • Quantity Surveyor and Senior Quantity Surveyor
  • Cost Manager and Senior Cost Manager
  • Project Manager and Senior Project Manager
  • Cost Estimator
  • Site Engineer and Section Engineer
The objective of my role is to help construction industry jobseekers into new, exciting construction jobs with our market leading clients. I work with candidates and clients in the UK and Canada.

On a daily basis I research, shortlist, contact and interview premium construction industry candidates. If the candidate is suitable for the job that I am recruiting for, I then forward their CV to the client, which hopefully leads to the interview stage. Usually, after 1 to 2 interviews if the candidate matches employers’ requirements and they both like each other it leads to an offer stage. In many cases my candidate will accept an offer within a few days of consideration, which turns into a placement, however regularly a part of my role is to negotiate candidates  a better package, if they are not happy with what being offered.

My job is nowhere near over when the candidate accepts an offer. I have to regularly stay in touch with my placed candidate throughout their period of transition – between a job offer and start date. I like to check in with a candidate after a few months in their new role, to make sure that they are happy, and the role matched their expectations.

I write job adverts for our Maxim Recruitment website, and any job boards that we use. The goal of this is to attract new, unique candidates interested in our roles.

What separates Maxim Recruitment from the other recruitment agencies is our vigorous interview and shortlist process. We ensure that the candidates we put forward to our clients are definitely interested in the role and will add value to their company. A good recruiter not only helps candidates find jobs, but also helps businesses grow, and reach their ambitions by introducing them to candidates that can help make it happen. That is why we work hard to understand, the profile of a person the construction companies that we work with are looking for. Where and when possible, we prefer to meet up with our regular clients for face-to-face meetings. As a recruitment consultant, fostering strong, lasting relationships with candidates and clients is key.

I do think that to be successful as a recruiter you have a certain strength of character and to be resilient. As you are constantly dealing with people, you have to understand that certain things fall out of your control. You have days and even weeks where it seems like you would be doing all the right work, but things seem to keep falling over for reasons out of your control. This is where ability to stay level-headed and bounce back when times are tough is crucial within a recruitment consultant role.

The recruitment industry within construction is fast paced, demanding and sometimes can be extremely challenging but, at the same time very rewarding. Helping a candidate secure their dream construction job or finding the perfect employee for an appreciative business can bring a great sense of job satisfaction. Also, I like the fact that I can see the results of the hard work that I put in.

Currently good candidates in the construction industry are in extremely high demand, meaning that clients value the services of recruitment professionals like our team like never before.
