Posted by Steve Thomas on Friday, April 15, 2016

There's more good news for the construction industry as projects get the go-ahead and opportunities for quantity surveyors and civil engineers in particular, become available.

Seeing that airport expansions are big news, we see this area as one of the next big areas of opportunity.

So while London discusses the pros and cons about where the third runway will finally be built, Hong Kong looks as though it's finally getting there after a ten year delay. Back here in the UK, Manchester Airport has been given the go-ahead for its expansion plans opening up the market in the north.

All of these projects open doors for skilled workers in the UK construction industry.

Manchester Expands

Manchester airport is the third largest in the UK after Heathrow and Gatwick. They have recently won approval of their plans for a £1billion expansion which will accommodate an additional 10 million passengers taking their capacity up to 30 million by 2025.

The expansion programme, which includes 60 improvements, is expected to take 10 years to complete and will include the demolition of the Terminal 1 building and car park. To compensate Terminal 2 will be completely reconfigured and include a huge extension and a baggage factory as well as a multi-storey car park. This will mean the Terminal 2 building will become the primary building at the complex.

Improvements will also be made to Terminal 3 and a direct link between this building and the newly improved Terminal 2 building will be built. The enhancements will include a US pre-clearing facility for those boarding flights to the US. In addition, new stands and piers will be built and changes to the roads around e airport will be made.

All part of bringing Manchester Airport bang up to the minute for the 21st century and the increasing amount of air travel. It is definitely well on the way to developing as a global gateway with the planned improvements.
