From Estimator to Strategic Cost Adviser | Is It Time for Your Next Career Move?
Posted by Steve Thomas , Construction Recruitment Director, UK & Canada on Thursday, September 3, 2026
The best estimating professionals do more than calculate what a project might cost. They understand why it costs what it does, what could change the cost and how those insights can influence important project decisions.
As major infrastructure and capital programmes become increasingly complex, experienced estimating and cost professionals are increasingly valuable for their ability to combine technical expertise with commercial thinking and client advice. But could your experience be worth more than producing estimates?
From estimating to influencing decisions
For many experienced estimators, career progression can mean moving beyond the production of estimates and becoming more involved in the decisions surrounding them.
That could mean moving from:
Producing estimates → challenging estimates → advising clients → influencing major project decisions
If you have developed strong technical, commercial and analytical skills throughout your career, you may already have many of the qualities needed to make that transition.
Could your experience be transferable?
You could be well suited to a more senior estimating or cost advisory role if you have experience in:
- Major civil engineering or infrastructure projects
- Quantity surveying, PQS or cost management
- Consultancy or client-side environments
- Advising clients, project teams or senior stakeholders
- Complex capital programmes
- Rail, highways, water, aviation, defence, energy, nuclear or similar sectors
- Estimating, cost assurance, benchmarking or cost analysis
- Working across different stages of the project lifecycle
UK experience is valuable, but international major-project experience can also be relevant where you have the appropriate right to work in the UK.
