The Boom in Construction Jobs in Hong Kong

Construction Jobs in Hong Kong in the 1990s
The Airport Core Program in Hong Kong was undoubtedly the largest construction project in the World during the 1990s.  Do you remember the plethora of construction jobs in Hong Kong at the time, providing fantastic opportunities for countless qualified civil engineers, quantity surveyors, project managers and planners?

I remember, as I was a young and eager civil engineer, looking to cut my teeth on the international circuit, and fortunate enough to secure one of those engineering jobs in Hong Kong, using the services of one of those construction recruitment agencies.

The relentless tide of locals and expatriates returning to take up QS jobs and engineering jobs in Hong Kong was staggering and only matched by the massive influx of construction professionals to fill quantity surveying jobs and engineering jobs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai some 10 years later.  Hong Kong was recognized, and quite justifiably, as one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the World. It was a city that never slept, where you worked hard and played hard, and was blessed, somewhat surprisingly, with some of the most diverse and ruggedly unspoiled countryside and coastline, all accessible by a brilliantly engineered public transportation system.

Construction Jobs in Hong Kong in 2011 Onwards
Fast forward to 2011, I’m a little older and little less wise and a Hong Kong construction boom is happening all over again!! With an earmarked annual spend on infrastructure of £4Billion a year for the next 8 years, Hong Kong is investing solidly in its future and it’s a civil engineer’s dream come true! From where I sit in our offices in Central, HK, there are massive opportunities for quantity surveyors and an abundance of engineering jobs in Hong Kong today.

Getting a Hong Kong Construction Job:
Construction Recruitment by a Hong Kong Construction Recruitment Agency
How do you secure that career opportunity? My advice (for what it's worth) would be to engage the services of a high quality, well respected construction recruitment agency, with an office and a team on the ground in Hong Kong (see previous blog article for full details).  However, I might be somewhat biased in favour of construction recruitment agencies as I stepped out of the engineering profession in 2004 to establish my own construction recruitment agency in Dubai.
I've recently also joined forces with Maxim Recruitment to further develop our collective global reach within the Asia construction industry.  Our team focus is now on Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, whilst we all continue to service our Middle East and UK based clients and candidates.
