The world of construction consistently sees exciting new projects being announced, and Canada has to be one of the most exciting locations currently. The construction industry is continuing to grow across Canada, and this growth is estimated to continue throughout 2022 and beyond. Thanks to this expansion, more high-value and ambitious projects are both beginning and continuing. Here’s a round-up of some of the most exciting construction projects planned in Canada for 2022:

Site C Clean Energy Project

This is currently the highest value project going on in Canada, and subsequently is one of the biggest! This BC Hydro project, valued at CAD$16b, Site C Clean Energy Project based in British Columbia, began back in 2015. The aim of the project is to provide an environmentally friendly, renewable, and clean source of energy for B.C. for at least a hundred years. The project hopes to be finished by 2025, with its first generators up and running in 2024.

GO Expansion – On-Corridor Works

Ontario is seeing a construction project that aims to upgrade and expand the provinces rail network over the next decade or so. Headed by Metrolinx, the aim is to transform the system into a two-way service, running all-day at every fifteen minutes at the core sections of the GO rail network. The project will see the addition of new tracks, new trains, new stations, and a train control system to help enable its fifteen-minute running times. The project is valued at CAD$15.7b and will aim to be mostly completed by 2025.

Bruce Power Refurbishment Project

The Bruce Nuclear generating station, based in Ontario, is the largest nuclear power plant in Canada, with the Bruce Power Refurbishment Project planning to overhaul and renew all its units. The project started back in January 2016, starting with replacing the older nuclear reactor systems. Currently the project is in its Major Component Replacement stage, with three more stages planned up to 2033. The overall aim of the CAD$13b project is to extend the life of the nuclear plant up to 2064.

Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant

Iona Island Wastewater Treatment is the primary water treatment facility for Vancouver communities, the UBC Endowment Lands and sections of Burnaby and Richmond. As the facility is now reaching the end of its service life, Metro Vancouver is taking the opportunity to help contribute to the health and wellbeing of its people. The project aims to continue the work of the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, whilst improving quality and service standards. The CAD$10b project is also placing people of 14 local First Nations at the forefront in an aim to positively contribute to surrounding communities.

Romaine Complex

Another large energy project is Hydro-Quebec’s Romaine Complex, employing four generating stations along the Romaine River. Currently, the CAD$7.2b project is in its fourth and final stage, with Romaine-1, Romaine-2, and Romaine-3 already having been completed. As such, this project is estimated to finish in the last few months of 2022. Not only is the project aiming to create a renewable, clean energy source, it’s so far created 975 jobs each year since 2009 when the project began. Hydro-Quebec has said it is dedicated to sustainable development without risking the energy supply of future generations.

Parliamentary Precinct Rehabilitation Project

One of the biggest building projects in Canada 2022 is the extensive interior and exterior refurbishment planned for Ottawa’s parliament building. As the project is in its early stages, so far the cost estimate is between CAD$4.5-5b, with a current CAD$4.7b being granted via federal funding. The final design, scope, and timeline was released in June 2021 in which Public Services and Procurement Canada estimated the major construction of the project would be completed by 2030-31. However, it will require significant testing after this construction to ensure the rooms are safe for use.

There are a huge range of projects both currently underway and about to go to site for construction in Canada, with the above list only showcasing a few of the highlights within the Canadian construction industry currently.
