Canada is an exciting location for construction industry job seekers, with a variety of roles offering career development opportunities, good compensation and benefits, and great work–life balance.

In recent years, alongside high-value, ambitious building and infrastructure projects there has been renewed interest in Rail projects, as governments and businesses look for ways to improve the transportation infrastructure in Canada. Here is a summary of some of the top Canada Rail projects planned for 2023.

GO Expansion

The GO Expansion (formerly known as Regional Express Rail – RER) is a major infrastructure project aimed to improve Go Transit train services by providing all day, two-way services on 5 major corridors within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area. This will increase service frequency to provide world- class rail service to the Greater Toronto area.

The project will add new tracks, stations, and trains, and it is expected to be completed by 2025.

According to Canada’s Construct Connect  the GO Expansion project in the Greater Toronto Area is expected to create over 25,000 jobs during construction and over 1,000 permanent jobs once it is operational.

Broadway Subway project

Another major rail project in Canada is the Broadway Subway project. This project will create a new subway line in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Broadway Subway will extend the Expo Line from King George Station to Nanaimo Station. The project is expected to cost $2.83 billion and it is expected to be completed by 2025.

The Broadway Subway project is being funded by the federal government, the provincial government of British Columbia, and the City of Vancouver.

The provincial government awarded the project to a private consortium composed of Spanish engineering contractor Acciona and Italian tunneller Ghella as the project’s design-build contractor.

This project is expected to create thousands of jobs and help reduce traffic congestion in Vancouver.

HFR Project

One of the most ambitious rail projects in Canada is the High Frequency Rail (HFR) project. This project will create a new high-speed rail network between Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City. The HFR is expected to reduce travel times between these cities by up to 90 minutes, and to create many new job opportunities for transit/ construction professionals. The HFR project is currently in the planning stages, and it is expected to be completed by 2030.

Eglinton Crosstown LRT

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is a $5.3 billion project to build a light rail line in Toronto. The project is expected to be completed this year (2023) and will have a total of 19 stations. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT will be able to carry up to 60,000 passengers per hour.

These are just few of the many rail projects that are underway in Canada in 2023. These projects are a sign of the government's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and they are essential to the country's economic and social development, as they will help to create jobs, improve transportation, and connect communities.

One of the most significant benefits of these rail projects is the creation of new jobs. The construction and operation of these projects will require a significant workforce.

At Maxim we have an exciting opportunity for a Train Service Design Manager to develop and operationalise Train Service Plans for a new rail infrastructure project in Toronto.
