Water Sector QS and Estimating Jobs on the Rise in UK

Posted by Adam Cadwaladr on Tuesday, January 23, 2018

There remains a wide-spread skills shortage in UK construction and infrastructure, and as Quantity Surveying and Estimating recruitment specialists we are seeing this first hand. One sector in particular that is in need of quality commercial staff, is in the water and utilities sector. Maxim Recruitment have recently been asked to secure quantity surveyors and estimators across the UK, to work on major £multi-billion water programmes.

Who is Recruiting?

We are recruiting for an international consultancy who has involvement in various water programmes around the UK. The consultancy is involved in a wide variety of project sectors, and there is scope to transfer sectors within once doing a “stint” in a certain sector, should you so wish. You will have the opportunity to work in sectors such as highways, rail, environmental, aviation and buildings in your future career at the company.

Which Profession is Being Sought?

High calibre Quantity Surveyors and Estimators are required for various locations around the UK. We would also be interested to speak to project managers in this sector.

What Seniority?

We are recruiting mainly for intermediate level Quantity Surveyors and Estimators up to the Senior levels of Quantity Surveying and Estimating jobs. In the Estimating field, a Lead Estimator opportunity is available in the North West for someone to manage clients and stakeholders, and manage a team in the water sector.

Where are the Jobs?

Jobs vary in location and often change dependant on the specific needs of the programmes at any one time. We are heavily recruiting in the North West, East Anglia, South East, and London regions on major water programmes.

What Project Backgrounds are Considered?

Quantity Surveyors and Estimators from a strong civils background are required, ideally with experience of pipelines or other water sector projects. NEC contract experience is a bonus and preferable, however not essential should you have relevant water and pipelines experience using other contracts.

What Company Backgrounds are Considered?

We are keen to speak to Quantity Surveyors and Estimators from both client side and Main Contracting backgrounds. Both sets of backgrounds are suitable for these opportunities, and in the South East in particular, Main Contracting backgrounds may even be favoured.

What Salaries are Being Offered?

Salaries vary based on experience (as always!), however a guide is between £30k - £65k. The lower end will be for Assistants and Intermediate level Quantity Surveyors and Estimators and the higher end for Senior Quantity Surveyors and Senior Estimators.

Are Qualifications Important?

At least some form of qualification is preferred, whether it be a degree or Membership of a professional body such as the RICS. Membership to the RICS is less important at the junior level but at the Senior Quantity Surveyor level, MRICS is preferred. This being said, the correct experience is likely more important than being chartered, despite the opportunity being with a consultancy.

How can you apply?

Please send your CV to us via a specific job (start searching below) or send us your CV if you are interested in hearing more about these opportunities. We have expert recruiters on hand to assess each application, and can assess suitability for each CV accordingly. If we deem the application suitable, we will be in touch for a confidential conversation about the great opportunities we currently have.
