Quantity Surveyor

Graduate Quantity Surveyor with some hands on post contract experience needed to undertake post contract contracting QS duties based from the Pontefract / Wakefield area in West Yorkshire.

There will be a variety of build and civil engineering contracting Quantity Surveying duties focused around identifying construction delays and the cost and time consequences.

The QS Quantity Surveyor will need to be able to perform core Quantity Surveying duties such as valuations, variations and final accounts to a high standard of commercial literacy and with minimal supervision.

Quantity Surveyor job vacancy based in the Wakefield, Pontefract West Yorkshire area.

Primary job responsibilities for the new QS is to support fee earning commercial QS staff with providing a premium post contract quantity surveying service to their construction contracting clients by identifying delay events and cost issues relating to Covid-19 and other causes of delay & flagging and evidencing them in a way that adds weight to the contractor's claim submission.

This requires care and attention to cost detail and an evidence based commercial management approach rather than a speculative or optimistic 'catch all' approach.

Construction projects undertaken by the contractors you will work with are both building construction and civil engineering related and offer fantastic exposure to a range of project types and forms of construction contract.

Responsibilities and Duties

The Quantity Surveyor to fill this job vacancy must be sufficiently experienced in basic Quantity Surveying concepts, procedures and job duties that they can work unsupervised to perform the following traditional contracting quantity surveying job duties without need for continuous management and supervision:

• Perform valuations of work completed unassisted
• Identify and price variations in work unassisted
• Able to identify and evaluate plant, labour and material costs and to reconcile differences between budget and actual costs with minimal supervision
• Able to understand and identify what may be construction delay events and to be able to quantify them in both time and cost terms
• With some training and supervision be able to read and interpret client instructions, contractual entitlements and be able to draft notice letters and correspondence stating the contractual and financial position
• Demonstrate the ability to be flexible and adopt a pro-active and problem solving attitude aiming for 'win-win' outcomes and negotiated settlements rather than direct confrontations.
• Able to communicate accurately and diplomatically with colleagues, clients, subcontractors and all stakeholders in the construction food chain
• Demonstrate a proactive and considered approach and to build trust and professional respect within clients and construction stakeholders.

Desired Skills and Experience

This Quantity Surveyor job role could suit either a Graduate QS with at least a year of experience or more likely a Graduate QS that has up to 5 years of site based contracting experience with a building contractor, civil engineering contractor or subcontractor. Even PQS Professional Quantity Surveying experience would be acceptable if mostly post contract and the candidate displays all the necessary interpersonal and intellectual qualities and potential.

Some previous experience of performing the core commercially focused Quantity Surveying duties is required, in particular;

• demonstrable experience of being able to undertake valuations of work completed
• demonstrable experience of being able to identify and price variations
• able to demonstrate an understanding of and ideally experience of the successful identification and commercial management of the consequences of delay events
• able to identify and represent a commercial and contractual position to line management and for it to be developed further to create a position of contractual entitlement for Covid-19 delays to result in costs incurred and time entitlements to be promptly received and amicable supply chain relations maintained.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

Candidates with a BSc in Quantity Surveying or a construction degree in Commercial Management or similar cost and quantity surveying or cost management degree are preferred however candidates able to demonstrate commercial and contractual literacy and experience will be considered on merit.
