An established rail contractor company in Ontario, Canada is seeking a Construction Manager also known in Canada as a Director of Field Operations.

The Construction Manager cum Director of Field Operations will be responsible for performing project management duties and will report to the Project Director.

Project Details

The Rail Construction Manager will have the overall responsibility to ensure that rail construction projects are completed successfully. They will also make sure the schedule is completed in accordance with contract milestones and maintain resources within the project budget. The Rail Construction Manager will be responsible for managing and directing junior Construction Managers and Superintendents over multiple construction sites, and will be responsible for all personnel of the assigned projects.

Responsibilities and Duties

Rail Construction Manager Job Duties to include:

  • Build, manage, and communicate project schedules to the Project Director
  • Manage project timelines for each project from start to finish
  • Support, monitor and document progress in alignment with the Project Schedule
  • Support projections and implementation; ensuring adherence to the schedule of field operations
  • Evaluate project resources ensuring supply of materials and labour, keeping within deadlines
  • Monitor and support safety culture and implement improvement measures
  • Lead investigations for any incidents
  • Ensure Supervisors are leading project teams e.g. Construction Managers, Superintendents & Foremen related to electrical, signal and civil scope of work
  • Work with Environmental Health and Safety to maintain strict safety guidelines are followed on site
  • Monitor and support quality control teams
  • Review and approve invoices and submit for approval
  • Verify that backup documentation conform to company standards
  • Communicate with Owner
  • Identify scope for subcontractors
  • Create relationships with new vendors that will improve pricing and efficiency
  • Work in the field
  • Plan, Schedule and execute work plans

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in Rail Construction Industry is essential as a Rail Construction Manager or similar operational hands on role
  • A minimum of ten (10) years as a Manager on complex and large projects
  • Contractor experience in Rail or Heavy Civil construction design build environments is an asset
  • Construction and Planning experience with civil, electrical or signal installations is required
  • On-site experience required as a Rail Construction Manager or Rail Project Manager
  • Thorough knowledge of construction technology, scheduling, and methods
  • Strong leadership and managerial qualities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency utilising applications such as Microsoft Office

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • University Degree in Engineering or Project Management; or a relevant post-secondary discipline
