Senior Cost Consultant
An excellent opportunity for a Senior Cost Consultant to be based in one of a number of possible locations across Toronto to join a leading cost and engineering consultancy delivering complex water infrastructure projects across Canada.
This role offers involvement in both pre- and post-contract stages on major clean and wastewater schemes, providing strong career development within cost consulting and construction consultancy services and the opportunity to specialise QS and cost consultancy expertise in the civil engineering infrastructure and clean and dirty water sectors.
Project Details
The successful Senior Cost Consultant will work for a leading international engineering consultancy on a diverse portfolio of water infrastructure projects including clean water and wastewater treatment plants. Projects range from refurbishment schemes through to major new-build developments, with project values reaching up to $420 million CAD.
As you will be working on projects across Toronto, across Ontario and across Canada, it is possible to be based from any Toronto region office, including ones in downtown Toronto, Markham. Mississauga, Burlington or in Hamilton.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Senior Cost Consultant will play a key role across the full project lifecycle on design and build water and civil engineering projects, working closely with contractors and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with contractors on design and build construction projects
- Prepare and manage fee proposals and bid submissions during pre-construction
- Develop and manage time and task matrices for project delivery
- Demonstrate strong contractual awareness in preparing and reviewing contracts
- Manage commercial activities during live project delivery
- Draft and issue commercial correspondence including formal letters
- Prepare and submit applications for payment
- Manage change control processes and variations
- Defend and negotiate fee levels in line with agreed scope of works
- Provide commercial advice across both pre-contract and post-contract stages
Desired Skills and Experience
This Senior Cost Consultant role is suited to candidates with strong cost management experience within construction or infrastructure sectors, ideally within water or civil engineering environments.
- Approximately 8–10 years’ experience in quantity surveying or cost consulting roles (or equivalent) is desired, although will be based on the strength of experience and demonstrable competences
- Experience working on water infrastructure, utilities, or civil engineering projects is highly desirable
- Background in civil engineering or M&E (mechanical and electrical) disciplines is advantageous (major/complex build experience also acceptable)
- Experience working within Canadian construction or cost management environments is preferred (although training can be given)
- Knowledge or experience in delay claims defence is beneficial
- Strong commercial awareness and contract knowledge
- Excellent written communication skills, particularly for commercial documentation
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Civil Engineering or similar
- Professional membership (e.g. MRICS or CIQS or equivalent) is desirable but not essential
