Electrical Quantity Surveyor

The successful candidate will work on a diverse portfolio of defence, government and industrial projects, undertaking both pre-contract and post-contract quantity surveying and cost management duties.

The successful Electrical Quantity Surveyor will work for a professional construction cost consultancy, delivering cost management services for a range of defence, government, and industrial developments in Ottawa and the surrounding Ontario region. Projects may include secure government facilities, industrial buildings and specialist defence-related infrastructure.
The role offers the opportunity to be involved throughout the full project lifecycle, including feasibility, cost planning, procurement, and post-contract commercial management.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Electrical Quantity Surveyor will support the delivery of professional cost consulting and quantity surveying services on electrical packages across multiple construction projects in Ottawa.
Typical duties will include:
- Preparation of electrical cost estimates and cost plans during feasibility and design stages
- Assisting with tender documentation, bills of quantities and procurement strategies
- Reviewing contractor tender submissions and preparing tender analysis reports
- Supporting value engineering and cost optimisation exercises for electrical installations
- Monitoring project costs and preparing regular cost reports for clients
- Assisting with change management and valuation of variations
- Reviewing contractor progress claims and recommending payments
- Supporting final account negotiations and financial close-out of projects
- Working collaboratively with project managers, engineers and design consultants
- Assisting in maintaining cost control processes throughout the project lifecycle
- Ensuring projects are delivered within approved budgets and timelines
Desired Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will be an Electrical Quantity Surveyor or Electrical Cost Consultant with several years of experience in construction cost management within Canada or internationally.
Candidates with experience across defence, government or industrial construction projects will be particularly attractive.
- Approximately 6–8 years of experience in an Electrical Quantity Surveyor or Electrical Cost Manager role
- Experience in undertaking both pre-contract and post-contract quantity surveying duties
- Strong knowledge of electrical construction packages and building services systems
- Experience working within a cost consultancy, PQS practice or similar professional environment
- Good understanding of cost planning, procurement and contract administration
- Experience supporting tendering and contractor procurement processes
- Strong analytical and cost management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with clients, consultants and contractors
- Excellent communication and report writing skills
- Security clearance already obtained would be advantageous
- Ability to obtain Government of Canada security clearance is essential due to the nature of the projects
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related construction discipline is desirable
- Membership of CIQS (Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors) is advantageous
- Candidates currently working towards Chartered or Professional Quantity Surveyor status are also encouraged to apply
- Professional development towards chartership is supported
