A Project Controls Engineer is required to support the delivery of major infrastructure and construction programmes across the South West and wider UK.

This is an excellent early-career opportunity for candidates with 1-4 years’ experience in cost management, planning, scheduling or project controls.

Project Details

This Project Controls Engineer role will support major infrastructure, construction, utilities, aviation, rail, energy, defence and nuclear-related programmes.

Projects may include major programmes connected to Sizewell C, HS2, Thames Water, Heathrow aviation projects, Network Rail, National Grid, dockyard and MOD projects, as well as other nationally significant infrastructure schemes.

The successful candidate will help project teams monitor cost, schedule, risk, change and performance reporting, ensuring that major projects are delivered with clear data, robust controls and effective decision-making.

Responsibilities and Duties

As a Project Controls Engineer, you will assist the project controls function on major infrastructure or construction programmes. You will help integrate cost, schedule, risk, change and reporting processes to support successful project delivery.

This role will suit an early-career candidate looking to develop technical expertise in project controls, cost management, planning and project reporting while working alongside experienced project controls professionals.

  • Assist with establishing and maintaining the Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB)
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of Earned Value Management (EVM) systems
  • Collate, check and report KPIs relating to time, cost, risk, change and quality
  • Assist with the preparation of periodic and ad-hoc project controls reports
  • Support the preparation of monthly project review packs and project performance updates
  • Help analyse project health data to support informed decision-making
  • Assist with developing and implementing change control processes
  • Support change forums and help escalate decisions where required
  • Help integrate risk assessments into project controls reporting
  • Work with planning, cost, risk and project management teams to ensure joined-up project controls information
  • Support the use of planning, scheduling and project controls software such as Primavera P6 and MS Project
  • Contribute to a collaborative, high-performance project environment

Desired Skills and Experience

The ideal Project Controls Engineer will have gained 1-4 years’ experience in cost, planning, scheduling or project controls.

Major project experience within infrastructure, construction, energy, rail, aviation, utilities, defence or nuclear would be advantageous, although early-career candidates will be considered based on the whole range of experience gained to date.

  • 1-4 years’ experience in cost management, planning, scheduling or project controls
  • Some experience working on construction, infrastructure, engineering or major programme environments
  • Knowledge of cost, schedule, risk and change management principles
  • Understanding of project controls processes and project reporting
  • Familiarity with Earned Value Management would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of Primavera P6 and/or MS Project
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to interpret project data and communicate findings clearly
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to learn from experienced project controls, planning and cost management professionals
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary project teams
  • A proactive and organised approach to work
  • Candidates must be able to attend the Bristol office as required
  • Candidates should live within the South West region, including Bristol, Bath, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon or Cornwall

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in construction management, engineering, quantity surveying, project management, cost management or a related subject is desired
  • APM, PMI or similar project management or project controls qualifications would be advantageous
  • Candidates working towards APM, PMI or similar qualifications will be strongly considered
  • Support may be available to help the successful candidate achieve further professional qualifications as their project controls career develops
