An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor / Commercial professional to join a specialist commercial and contract management consultancy in London at Consultant level.
This role would suit:

A Quantity Surveyor / Commercial professional with strong core commercial experience gained with a reputable contractor or consultancy, who wants to develop their expertise in commercial recovery, quantum analysis and, if desired, claims and disputes work.

You will apply your solid commercial foundations across a variety of building, civil engineering and infrastructure projects, while receiving training and support to build (or deepen) your experience in quantum and dispute-related work.

Project Details

Working within this specialist commercial and contract management consultancy, you will provide services to a range of high-quality clients, including:

  • Tier one and regional main contractors
  • Specialist subcontractors
  • Client and employer organisations

The consultancy’s core focus is on commercial management, quantum assessment and commercial recovery, with additional involvement in claims and dispute resolution. You will work on a mix of live projects and retrospective commissions that may include:

  • Traditional commercial / QS support on live projects
  • Quantum analysis and assessment of change, costs and entitlements
  • Assistance with the preparation and defence of claims and, where relevant, support on formal disputes such as adjudication

You do not have to arrive with formal disputes experience; there is a clear opportunity to grow into this area. If you are already working within a disputes-focused consultancy, you will find scope here to take on more responsibility and gain broader project and client exposure.

Responsibilities and Duties

As a Consultant – Commercial & Quantum, you will work alongside experienced colleagues, taking ownership of defined workstreams and gradually increasing your level of responsibility as you develop.
Typical duties will include:

  • Reviewing and analysing tender, contract and project documentation
  • Providing commercial management support on live projects, including valuations, variations, change control and final accounts
  • Helping to identify, evidence and support clients’ commercial entitlements on change, loss and expense and other matters
  • Interrogating and assessing construction costs, valuations, change records and commercial reporting
  • Assisting with the preparation of commercial reports, cost assessments and quantum analyses
  • Drafting clear written narratives, commercial justifications and supporting information for compensation events or similar change mechanisms
  • Supporting the preparation of claims documentation under the guidance of more senior consultants (with training where required)
  • Assisting with the preparation of dispute referral, response and reply documents for adjudications and other formal disputes, where appropriate
  • Applying standard forms of contract, in particular NEC, and potentially JCT and bespoke contracts
  • Liaising with client commercial, project and site teams, spending time at client offices or project sites in London and occasionally elsewhere in the UK
  • Supporting more senior staff on larger commissions and beginning to mentor more junior colleagues as your experience grows

This role will give you regular exposure to complex commercial issues and quantum assessments, with a structured pathway to develop into more formal disputes work and future promotion to Senior Consultant.

Desired Skills and Experience

The successful Consultant – Commercial & Quantum is likely to demonstrate:

  • Experience as a Quantity Surveyor / Commercial professional with a reputable main contractor, subcontractor or  a comparable consultancy
  • Strong, hands-on experience of core commercial management: valuations, variations, change control, cost reporting and final accounts
  • A good working knowledge of NEC forms of contract, including compensation events and payment mechanisms (experience with JCT and/or bespoke contracts is helpful but not essential)
  • Experience working in organisations with sound commercial procedures and reporting
  • Confidence in preparing, assessing and interrogating construction costs and commercial data
  • Ability to draft clear, well-structured commercial correspondence and narratives
  • Some exposure to claims and/or commercial recovery issues is desirable; any exposure to formal disputes would be a bonus but is not essential
  • Eagerness to develop in quantum, claims and disputes work with appropriate support and training
  • Good planning, organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, comfortable dealing with client commercial and project teams

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • A degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a closely related discipline is essential
  • Ideally working towards Chartered status (MRICS or equivalent), or already chartered; strong non-chartered candidates with suitable experience will also be considered
  • Any additional training or study in construction law, contract law or dispute resolution would be an advantage but is not a requirement

Employing Company Overview and Profile

The employer is a British commercial and contract management consultancy with a prestigious client base that includes tier one main contractors, regional contractors, specialist subcontractors and client organisations.
They operate nationally and have involvement on selected international projects. Much of your work can be undertaken from the company’s London office, with hybrid working where appropriate. However, it is common for consultants to be embedded within client teams for specific commissions, which may involve working on sites or in client offices in London and, on occasion, elsewhere in the UK. You should therefore be prepared to travel when required.
This Consultant role is ideal for:

  • Quantity Surveyors who enjoy the commercial side of projects and want to broaden into more specialist commercial and quantum work (with the option to move into disputes), and
  • Consultants currently working in a commercial or disputes consultancy who are looking for a step up in the scale of work, client exposure and clear progression towards Senior Consultant.

The business promotes an inclusive, professional working culture and actively supports ongoing training, professional development and structured career progression.

Additional Benefits Package and Incentives

  • Salary: up to £65,000 (DOE)
  • Discretionary bonus
  • Private medical insurance
  • Pension scheme
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Professional fees paid (where applicable)
  • Opportunities for further training, development and progression
