Graduate Quantity Surveyor
An excellent Graduate Quantity Surveyor job in Glasgow is available with a well-established construction consultancy. The successful candidate will receive structured commercial experience across NEC contracts, cost management, procurement, payments and change control, supported by experienced Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Managers.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Graduate Quantity Surveyor will work alongside experienced commercial professionals while developing practical quantity surveying, cost management and contract administration skills.
Key duties will include:
- Assisting with the administration of NEC construction contracts under supervision
- Developing an understanding of key contractual clauses, notices and commercial procedures
- Supporting the identification, recording and management of project risks and opportunities
- Maintaining accurate commercial records and helping identify missing information
- Assisting with change management, including identifying potential changes and preparing notices
- Supporting the preparation and submission of applications for payment
- Compiling supporting records and substantiation for valuations and payment applications
- Assisting with subcontract administration and the preparation of subcontract documentation
- Supporting subcontract payment assessments and maintaining appropriate records
- Collating information for cost and value reconciliation reports
- Assisting with the procurement process, including preparing tender enquiries and reviewing submissions
- Supporting the preparation of final account documentation and substantiation
- Helping compile records and factual information for dispute resolution purposes
- Working collaboratively with colleagues, clients, contractors and other project stakeholders
- Participating positively in team meetings and structured learning activities
Desired Skills and Experience
The successful Graduate Quantity Surveyor should be commercially aware, organised and keen to build a career in quantity surveying and cost management.
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Some knowledge of quantity surveying and construction commercial management
- A basic understanding of construction contracts and contract administration
- Knowledge of NEC contracts gained through university, placement experience or employment
- An understanding of applications for payment, valuations and construction cost reporting
- Good numerical and analytical skills
- Strong attention to detail and an appreciation of accurate record keeping
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to work effectively as part of a commercial or project team
- A willingness to learn from senior colleagues and take responsibility for personal development
- Confidence using Microsoft Excel and other standard office software
- Previous construction work experience or an industry placement would be advantageous
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or another relevant construction discipline is required
- Candidates approaching completion of a relevant degree may also be considered
- Formal study or training relating to NEC contracts is desirable
- Membership of, or a commitment to work towards membership of, RICS or another recognised professional body is desirable
