Project Details

This Quantity Surveyor job is to support scaffolding packages on a range of UK building projects, including residential, high-rise and mixed-use developments. The successful candidate will work closely with operational and estimating teams to help ensure scaffolding works are commercially well managed, contractually compliant and delivered profitably from tender stage through to final account.

Responsibilities and Duties

This Quantity Surveyor role will suit a commercially astute construction professional who is comfortable taking ownership of the financial and contractual management of multiple scaffolding packages.

The successful candidate will provide day-to-day commercial support across the lifecycle of each project.

  • Produce accurate monthly valuations and applications for payment
  • Monitor project costs against budgets and report on profitability and commercial performance
  • Identify, price, value and agree variations and additional works
  • Manage cash flow, payment notices and final account submissions
  • Review and administer subcontract and main contract conditions, with JCT forms particularly relevant
  • Assist with tendering and the pricing of scaffolding packages
  • Work closely with Contracts Managers, Site Managers and Estimators to support successful project delivery
  • Attend site meetings and commercial reviews as required
  • Provide commercial input into project programmes and delivery strategies
  • Support dispute resolution and commercial negotiations where necessary
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and internal commercial procedures
  • Maintain accurate, organised and auditable commercial records throughout the full project lifecycle

Desired Skills and Experience

This Quantity Surveyor job is best suited to a candidate with strong commercial awareness and previous experience in a construction subcontractor or specialist contractor environment. Candidates with scaffolding knowledge and experience working alongside major UK main contractors are likely to be particularly well suited.

  • Proven experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within the UK construction industry
  • Previous experience in a subcontractor environment would be advantageous
  • Strong understanding of scaffolding operations and scaffolding packages is preferred
  • Good working knowledge of UK construction contracts, particularly JCT
  • Experience preparing valuations, variation accounts, cost reports and final accounts
  • Ability to monitor commercial performance and manage several projects at the same time
  • Experience working on residential, high-rise or mixed-use developments would be advantageous
  • Experience working with leading UK main contractors is preferred
  • Strong numerical, analytical and negotiation skills
  • Confident communication skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels
  • Proactive and organised approach, with the ability to work independently
  • Practical and solutions-focused mindset suited to a fast-paced subcontractor environment

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

The employer has not specified mandatory academic qualifications, so applications are likely to be welcomed from candidates with relevant practical Quantity Surveying and commercial management experience.

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related construction discipline would be advantageous
  • Equivalent vocational or industry-based training may also be considered
  • A good understanding of JCT contract administration is important
  • Membership of a relevant professional body such as the RICS or CIOB would be beneficial, but is not known to be essential
