Senior Consultant – Commercial & Quantum
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Consultant – Commercial & Quantum to join a specialist commercial and contract management consultancy based in Leeds.
This role would suit a Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Manager or existing Claims / Quantum Consultant who has already gained hands-on experience in construction claims and disputes and is now looking to further develop within a specialist consultancy environment.
The successful candidate will have previous experience preparing, assessing or defending claims, as well as exposure to dispute resolution processes such as adjudication. You will be expected to contribute to quantum analysis, claims strategy, written submissions and dispute-related work from an early stage.
Working closely with senior claims, quantum and disputes specialists, you will take ownership of defined workstreams, manage client-facing responsibilities and support the delivery of high-quality commercial, contractual and quantum services across live and retrospective construction and engineering projects.
Project Details
Working as part of a specialist commercial and contract management consultancy, you will provide services to a range of clients, including:
Tier one and regional main contractors
Specialist subcontractors
Client and employer organisations
The consultancy’s core services relate to claims, commercial recovery, contract management and dispute resolution. You will work regularly on commissions involving quantum analysis, preparation and defence of claims, assessment of entitlement and support in formal dispute proceedings.
You will be involved in both live project advisory work and retrospective dispute-related appointments. This may include reviewing project records, assessing variations and compensation events, preparing quantum submissions, supporting adjudication proceedings and helping clients to recover or defend sums in dispute.
From time to time, you may also be asked to undertake traditional quantity surveying and commercial management duties to support clients on live projects, which may involve travel.
There is also flexibility to work from home a couple of days a week.
Responsibilities and Duties
As a Senior Consultant – Commercial & Quantum, you will work independently and as part of a specialist consultancy team delivering commercial, contractual, claims and quantum services to clients.
This is a senior-level role requiring demonstrable previous claims and disputes experience, strong technical ability and the confidence to take ownership of defined workstreams.
Typical duties will include:
- Reviewing, analysing and interpreting tender, contract and project documentation
- Preparing, assessing and defending contractual and quantum claims
- Undertaking detailed quantum analysis in relation to variations, compensation events, prolongation, disruption, loss and expense and final account disputes
- Drafting and reviewing supporting narratives, particulars and submissions for claims and disputed matters
- Supporting the preparation of dispute referral, response and reply documents for adjudication and other formal dispute resolution processes
- Interrogating and assessing construction costs, valuations, change records, payment applications and final account information
- Identifying entitlement, causation and quantum issues in relation to claims and disputes
- Preparing clear written reports, commercial narratives and quantum assessments for client review
- Advising on the operation and administration of standard forms of contract, particularly NEC, with exposure to JCT and bespoke forms also beneficial
- Providing commercial management support on live projects through to final account where required
- Liaising directly with client commercial teams, project teams, site-based staff and legal representatives where appropriate
- Supporting senior experts and directors on complex claims and dispute-related commissions
- Assisting with the development of junior consultants and contributing to internal knowledge sharing
The role will focus heavily on claims and disputes work, while still drawing on your wider quantity surveying, commercial management and contract administration experience.
Desired Skills and Experience
The successful Senior Consultant – Commercial & Quantum must be able to demonstrate:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor, Commercial Manager, Claims Consultant, Quantum Consultant or similar construction commercial professional
- Previous hands-on claims and disputes experience is essential
- Experience preparing, assessing or defending construction claims
- Experience supporting formal dispute resolution processes, ideally adjudication
- Strong exposure to quantum analysis, commercial recovery, claims preparation and disputed final accounts
- Experience working for a reputable main contractor, subcontractor, consultancy or specialist claims / disputes business
- Good working knowledge of NEC forms of contract, including key clauses, compensation events and entitlement mechanisms
- Experience with JCT and/or bespoke forms of contract would also be beneficial
- A strong understanding of construction costs, valuations, variations, final accounts, change records and project records
- The ability to assess entitlement, causation and quantum in relation to claims and disputed matters
- Strong experience drafting and responding to compensation event notifications or similar contractual change processes
- The ability to write clear, structured and persuasive commercial narratives, reports and claim submissions
- A good understanding of construction contract law principles and how they apply to claims, entitlement and dispute resolution
- Excellent planning, organisational and time-management skills
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to deal directly with client teams at site, office and senior management level
- The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a small specialist team
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline is essential.
- Ideally, candidates will be Chartered Quantity Surveyors, MRICS or equivalent, or actively working towards chartered status with a recognised professional body such as the RICS.
- Additional training or qualifications related to construction law, contract law, claims, adjudication or dispute resolution would be advantageous.
