Responsibilities and Duties

The Clerk of Works / Construction Supervisor will be responsible for inspecting high-end residential construction works and representing the client’s interests on site. This role requires a well-presented, reliable and technically capable individual who can communicate professionally with the client, contractor and wider professional team.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out regular site inspections on a high-end residential construction project
  • Monitoring construction quality, workmanship and compliance with project requirements
  • Checking that works are being completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, details and agreed standards
  • Reading and interpreting architectural, structural and MEP drawings and construction details
  • Identifying defects, non-compliant works or quality concerns and reporting these clearly
  • Liaising professionally with the client, contractor, consultants and wider project team
  • Reviewing the quality of residential finishes, building fabric and MEP installations
  • Preparing accurate site inspection reports and maintaining clear project records
  • Attending site meetings when required and providing practical construction input
  • Supporting the successful delivery of a high-quality residential development in Derbyshire
  • Using IT systems and digital reporting tools to record inspections and communicate findings

Desired Skills and Experience

The successful Clerk of Works / Construction Supervisor candidate will have substantial construction industry experience, ideally gained on high-end residential projects. This role will suit a detail-orientated professional with the confidence to inspect works, communicate clearly and uphold high construction quality standards.

Desired skills and experience include:

  • Indicative 20 to 25+ years’ construction industry experience
  • Previous experience working on high-end residential construction projects
  • Strong background as a Clerk of Works, Construction Supervisor, Site Inspector, Building Inspector, Construction Manager or Site Manager
  • Excellent understanding of construction methods, detailing, sequencing and quality control
  • Strong ability to read drawings, specifications and technical construction details
  • Good knowledge of MEP works and how they interface with building fabric and finishes
  • Detail-orientated approach with a strong focus on workmanship and compliance
  • Experience identifying defects and reporting quality issues clearly and professionally
  • Confident communication skills, including with clients and professional teams
  • Well-presented, reliable and professional approach to site-based work
  • Proficient IT skills, including the ability to prepare written reports and use digital systems
  • Living local to Belper, Derby or Derbyshire, or within a practical daily commute

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

Formal qualifications are desirable, although strong practical construction experience and proven site inspection ability will be particularly important for this Clerk of Works / Construction Supervisor job.

Relevant qualifications may include:

  • ICWCI membership or working towards membership would be advantageous
  • CIOB, RICS or similar professional membership would be beneficial
  • Construction-related HNC, HND, degree or equivalent technical qualification would be desirable
  • Trade background with substantial site-based residential construction experience may also be suitable
  • CSCS card or equivalent site certification may be required
