An exciting Clerk of Works job in Oxford is available with an established construction consultancy, working across a portfolio of residential developments throughout Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Project Details

Based within reach of Oxford, the successful Clerk of Works will provide independent inspection and quality monitoring services across residential construction projects throughout Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the wider Thames Valley area.

The project portfolio is expected to include new build housing, refurbishment programmes and mixed-use developments at various stages of construction. Regular site inspections will be required to assess workmanship, identify potential defects and provide clients with an accurate record of construction quality and progress.

Responsibilities and Duties

Working across a portfolio of active sites, the Clerk of Works will act as an important point of reference for construction quality. The role requires a methodical approach to inspection, confident communication and the ability to produce high-quality written records.

  • Inspect residential construction works at key stages of project delivery
  • Assess workmanship and materials against approved drawings, specifications and required standards
  • Monitor compliance with relevant UK building regulations and construction requirements
  • Identify defects, snagging items and areas of non-compliant workmanship
  • Follow up previously identified issues and monitor completion of remedial works
  • Produce comprehensive site inspection reports supported by clear photographic evidence
  • Maintain accurate records of observations and construction progress
  • Communicate inspection findings clearly to clients, consultants and contractors
  • Participate in site and project meetings when required
  • Work across multiple projects while maintaining consistent standards of inspection and reporting
  • Contribute to the effective quality assurance and successful delivery of residential developments throughout Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire

Desired Skills and Experience

Applications are invited from experienced Clerks of Works and construction professionals with a strong understanding of residential building practices. The successful candidate will need excellent observational skills and the confidence to communicate quality concerns objectively and professionally.

  • Previous Clerk of Works, Site Inspector, Site Manager or comparable construction experience
  • Strong practical knowledge of residential construction and building methods
  • Experience inspecting new build housing, refurbishment or mixed-use developments
  • Sound understanding of construction quality standards and UK building regulations
  • A keen eye for detail with the ability to recognise defects and poor workmanship
  • Experience preparing professional site inspection and photographic reports
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with clients, contractors and other construction professionals
  • Capable of organising inspections and workload across several live projects
  • Knowledge of construction projects in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire or the wider Thames Valley would be beneficial
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between project locations

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Membership of the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI) is highly desirable, including Associate ICWCI membership, LICWCI or MICWCI
  • Membership or accreditation with CIOB, RICS, CABE or another relevant professional construction body will also be considered
  • A relevant construction, building or surveying qualification is desirable
