Technical Consultant
A growing construction disputes consultancy is seeking a Consultant – Technical to support expert witness appointments on major claims and disputes.
Based in London, you will undertake technical analysis, assist with expert reports, and support dispute resolution proceedings across the UK and internationally.
Project Details
The Consultant will support the delivery of technical expert witness and advisory work within a Forensic Expert Witness team.
This includes applying clear technical methodologies, reviewing design and construction records, analysing causation and technical compliance, and preparing well-evidenced technical inputs for reports and proceedings.
Assignments typically relate to litigation, arbitration and adjudication, with additional advisory work supporting live projects, settlement discussions and mediations in the UK and internationally.
Responsibilities and Duties
This role focuses on delivering high-quality technical analysis to support expert witness and dispute resolution work.
Typical duties will include:
- Support technical expert witness appointments as part of a wider team, including drafting technical sections of reports and assisting with the development of expert opinion
- Undertake technical investigations into design, construction and performance issues (e.g. defects, compliance, workmanship, specification, engineering standards)
- Review and interrogate key project documents including drawings, specifications, RFIs, method statements, inspection/testing records, site records, correspondence and contractual technical requirements
- Develop clear, evidence-based technical analyses on causation, liability and technical merits to support dispute resolution proceedings
- Assist with the preparation of robust technical expert reports and supporting exhibits, ensuring transparent reasoning and high presentation standards
- Support expert advisory work on live projects including dispute avoidance, technical risk reviews, and technical input to settlement strategy and negotiation support
- Help present technical findings clearly to clients, solicitors, counsel, tribunals and internal stakeholders
- Manage time, priorities and deadlines across multiple commissions, maintaining a consistent quality-first approach
- Contribute to internal quality assurance, research and knowledge sharing within the technical expert team
- Support relationship building through reliable delivery on expert witness jobs and construction dispute resolution jobs
Desired Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will be a capable technical professional with strong written communication and the ability to build structured, evidence-based analyses.
- Technical background in one core discipline: Architecture, MEP, Structural Engineering, or Civil Engineering
- Proven ability to investigate and explain technical issues using contemporaneous evidence and clear reasoning
- Experience producing technical reports, ideally linked to claims, disputes, defects investigation, expert advisory or formal proceedings
- Good understanding of design and construction processes, standards, specifications, and typical causes of defects/non-compliance
- Experience across construction and engineering projects (buildings, civil engineering, infrastructure) is beneficial
- Confident communicator able to explain technical issues clearly to internal teams and external stakeholders
- Commercial awareness and interest in how technical issues relate to claims and liability arguments
- Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain quality, and work effectively under deadline pressure
- Expert witness experience is advantageous but not essential where strong relevant technical reporting experience can be demonstrated
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- Degree qualified in Architecture, Building Services/MEP, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or similar (or equivalent)
- Progress toward chartership is desirable (e.g. RIBA, CIBSE, IStructE, ICE, or similar)
- Postgraduate study in construction law / dispute resolution (LLM / MSc) is advantageous but not essential
