Hong Kong: Update on Major Projects and Related Job Openings

Posted by Ola Bujak Graduate Recruitment Consultant on Monday, October 18, 2021

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most densely populated cities with over 6,800 citizens per square kilometre on average. With the forecasted population growth and the upcoming climate change issues, addressing infrastructure demands is becoming one of Hong Kong’s main priorities.

The coming years are going to be busy times for Site Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, BIM Engineers, Risk Engineers, Project Managers, and Planning Engineers as many construction projects are already at the site construction stage, and construction companies in Hong Kong are looking to expand their teams and hire new talent.

It is an exciting time for anyone looking for a new job in construction industry as recruitment consultants are going to have hands full with construction job vacancies to advertise and fill.

The most interesting infrastructure projects in Hong Kong include:

Hung Shui Kiu Station (HSK)

The Hung Shui Kiu Station is going to be built on the existing Tuen Ma Line between Tin Shui Wai Station and Siu Hong Station. The new station will primarily serve the transport needs of the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area in the future. Upon the full development, the new area will accommodate a population of 218,000 and generate 150,000 jobs. MTR’s aspiration is to make Hung Shui Kiu the first completely carbon neutral station. The project is currently at design stage.

Airport Railway Extended Overrun Tunnel (ARO)

Overrun tunnels for Tung Chung Line and Airport Express will be extended by c. 0.5km to the east of Hong Kong Station to enhance MTR’s capacity to deal with more passengers. It’s going to be one of the more complicated projects with a lot of utility diversions, temporary traffic management, and careful geotechnical monitoring. The project is also currently at design stage.

Hong Kong Airport Terminal 2 Expansion Project

The Terminal 2 expansion is part of the Three-Runway System project at Hong Kong International Airport. Its aim is to allow arrivals and departures from one terminal and increase the passenger capacity of the airport. The contract worth HK$12.88bn also includes the delivery of tunnels and associated works for an automatic people mover and baggage handling system on behalf of the Airport Authority. The project is currently in the construction stage.

Black Point Power Station Expansion Project

The project involves the design, construction and installation of a combined cycle gas turbine which will replace the current coal fired power unit with the ultimate aim of providing a cleaner source of electricity for Hong Kong. Up to two additional gas-fired generation units will be installed, with total capacity not exceeding 1,200MW, at the BPPS to both increase local gas-fired electricity generating capacity and accommodate growth in electricity demand. The project is currently in the construction stage.
